Newnan native, Ellis G. Arnall ran for governor in 1939 and won. During his time in office, he accomplished quite a bit, including being the first state to allow eighteen-year-olds to vote, revoking the charter of the KKK, and repealing the poll tax. He ran again for governor in 1966 but lost and returned to his law practice.
